Qualitative and Mixed Methods in Writing Research


Aims

The ELN Training School on Qualitative Methods and Mixed Methods in Writing Research aimed at providing Early Stage Researchers, PhD students, post docs and other possible ELN collaborators with specialized training in mixed-methods and qualitative approaches to writing research. Trainees were provided with practical experience in developing and using qualitative research instruments and analyzing data collected for their individual on-going or future projects. The three important outcomes of this training school are: (1) providing trainees with strategies to put the newly acquired knowledge of writing research into practice, (2) strengthening the network of qualitative researchers especially from developing countries in the region and (3) contribution of international scholars to training the next generation of qualitative researchers in the area of academic literacy. The topics covered include: overview of mixed methods, genre analysis, discourse-based interviews, discourse analysis, coding, conversation analysis, inter-rater-reliability, etc.

The outputs of the Training School were based on the following aims:

  • Connect both reading and writing young scholars and broaden their knowledge in the area of qualitative research methods
  •  Operate with an embracing definition of literacy as it is being constantly redefined
  •  Include explicit comparisons of cross-linguistic and cross-cultural differences among participating countries.
  •  Develop recommendations for educational practice
  •  Foster the research skills of early stage and other researchers across the breadth of the participating countries.
  • Secure a European Literacy Network that outlives the Action, thereby playing an enduring role in strengthening European’s capabilities.

The training school took place at the Faculty of Philology Blazhe Koneski, Ss. Cyril and Methodius University, Skopje, Republic of Macedonia.
